A Cliche

I know, it’s considered
A cliché type of thing
To make a rose
A symbol for love

But I always thought
That’s just it
A beautiful thing
So powerful
So minute
One concept
Captured
In one object

It has many layers
Roots
A foundation
Depth
Purity
Beauty
Simple
Yet
Convoluted

It has thorns
Of course
There are negatives
All you want
Is to capture
To hold
That one small
Object
So delicate

You take it
In your hands
And then you see
You feel
For the first time
And the second
And the third
Always
It will hurt you
You will bleed

And maybe
Maybe you’ll learn
Maybe you’ll hold it
Carefully
Next time

But always
Every time
You’ll feel the thorns
You’ll see the beauty
You’ll have it in your hands
But it will hurt you

However
If you care enough
If you want it
Enough
You won’t mind
The thorns

I know it's a cliche, but sometimes they're just so accurate...

Great metaphor. I have never really thought of a rose as being such an accurate symbol for love. I wonder, is this how the thorn came to represent love in the first place? By the way I'd appreciate it if you check out my poem, Palmer's Peak. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

that was so beautiful!!!!!!!!!! I took it like it was a warning to ppl to be careful to what you have, because even the sweeest thing in the world can be hurt, or has her/his negative or touchy points. But the way at the end that you said that you won't mind the pain if you want it enough is the dearest thing ever. Definitly true love. You've given the cliche more depth and meaning. I'v read so many poems, but this was defintly the best. Plz tell me what you think about my work! :)

Cliches are under-appreciated. This was such a good poem! Nice word choice. It alamost made me cry, just thinking about my life. Plus, roses are my favorite flower. You rock, keep it up!
