Nothing changes if nothing changes.

When we were young
We were taught to believe in fairytales
And majestic lands far away from here
We were taught magical creatures lived among us
A 6 ft. Rabbit that hid eggs
A jolly old fat man who gave us gifts
Fairies that would collect our teeth when we were asleep
Little men who ran around in the grass
Who had little pots of gold
Hidden at the end of the rainbow
We chased after that rainbow until our legs grew tired
Stay up to the sunset
so we could catch those creatures in the night
We believed with all our hearts that they were real
As we grew older
We were told that those creatures weren’t real
And those far off lands were only in stories
We were brought up just to be let down again
While we were being told that our childhood were lies
We were being taught reality
Reality was a book written to be a tragedy
So when we learned the truth
We stopped staying up
Stopped chasing that rainbow
We stopped because we knew stay up would only get our hopes up
We knew that if we continued to chase that rainbow
We would just make ourselves exhausted
But then we all secretly dreamed and hoped
The dreams that those majestic lands were real
And the hope?
That those creatures were hiding in the shadows
We hoped they were real.
We hoped because we wanted more then what we had
We wanted to believe
Believe that life wasn’t as cruel as it was made to be
We wanted to believe there were places
Places we could run to and hide
We wanted dragons and unicorns
A place where everything was backwards
And nothing made sense
Because what’s the point in making sense?
Secretly we wanted those creatures to come out
We knew that we would end that life
And never know one thing about the secrets held behind us
Secrets held above our heads
But we still knew
No matter how much we wanted these things to be real
They would still only belong in our dreams
They would still stay in those books
Only to be read than forgotten
