The Golden Boy
A golden boy,
Only nine years old.
He keeps to himself
While the universe unfolds.
By my bedside, there he stood,
Waiting all the long day
For the doctors to arrive,
Though he knew what they would say.
Looking down at me,
His eyes flooded with tears.
“Please stay here,” he said.
“I’m sorry, it’s too late, dear.”
Soon, then my time came.
My body ached, sore, in pain.
The doctors shook their heads.
For they knew this is my fate.
My brother’s little face looked down at me,
Trying not to cry, I said,
“I’m sorry, sweetie, I’m leaving now.
This time, I will be dead.”

This poem was inspired by a scene from the movie, The Impossible. It shows Lucas (played by Tom Holland) crying over a surgery his mother had to go through, fearful that she would die. I had the idea of a young boy and his dying older sister through that scene.
