"I think there must be a place inside of us where dreams go and wait their turn" - Sue Monk Kidd

Oh Midwinter, bleak Midwinter,

Cruel mistress that you are.

Gales and torrents bend to meet her.

Oh Great Suffering near and far.

--

Yet between the howles and lurching,

Rising up a spark of Hope.

Songs of Joy and great Thanksgiving,

Sustaining long and Glorious notes.

--

Hope, persistent in ambition,

Feeds our weary, hungry Souls.

Once complacent in submission,

Hearts do change to New-age tone.

--

Time of Mourning, Time of Musing,

Ever growing lessons learned.

That is of Her greatest boasting,

Winter of reflection turned.

The author's comments:

When you personify winter, most of you will probably see it as cruel and wicked. After all, the trees die and the cold can kill... But I decided to look at what winter truly was: a season of renewal and learning. Before the spring but after the slow burn of autumn, winter truly gives us a breath, a peace that no other season gives.
