Venus Hum
There's a beating under the floorboards
That's keeping me up at night
I have no idea
How this wrong seemed so right
You ask me who is down there
I slowly sigh "Alright"
I open up the floorboards
To show you her heart stuffed deep inside
"I wanted to get rid of her
To wash away the pain
Took her heart, laid it here
So no one else will ever take it again
But it's still beating
And it's driving me insane
Officer, it bangs my eardrums more
Than a beating from your cane.
Take me away
But don't take my dignity away from me
Why hold on to this memory
When it must and shall go free
Come on officer
The blood on my hands are enough to see
Cuff them together, take me to jail
And throw away the key."
"I can't let myself do that,"
Said the officer in a soft tone
"I can tell you're hurting
And a desperate one
But how desperate is he who uses
His own gun
In vain, you know freedom behind veils
Isn't easily won.
We saw her a quarter to three
She was lively and smiling
And walking to me
So tell me,
You must be lying to me
Or you are to someone else
Let me help you see..."
There's a beating under the floorboards
That's keeping me up at night
I have no idea
How this wrong seemed so right
You asked me who was down there
I thought I told myself, but I guess I lied
I said it was her
But... my God... it's me inside.
