The One Who Keeps My Secrets
His nose pressed-up against and fogging
The evening window of an autumn night;
His eyes set on the road for hours,
Watching the cars drive time along;
His shoulders slouched and shrunken,
He holds himself against the window pane.
His long ears take-in all of my nonsense;
He just sits and listens to my sins and tales,
Never judging, always letting me say what I need to.
He bears with me as I fumble around my words,
Trying my best to describe all the things in life
That were never meant to be given names,
And in time, my words gather along my tongue,
Order my lips into position, and reveal a truth.
He knows all my secrets, all my lies, actions,
Feelings, struggles, dilemmas, and thoughts;
Never once has he told a soul, not once.
He sits with me in my babbling and rambling,
And he runs with me in my silence and panting,
Out along the trail by the creek, we chase
Understanding with endorphin smiles on our faces.
He’s always with me; he really is man’s best friend.
