Ice Falls
The day that ice falls by my house
Will be the day of purest joy
Not such a thing could quite compare
To the splendor such employs
My life has too filled with heat
Far too much sunny bliss
The blinding sun, it never fails
A locked, eternal kiss
California’s said to be
A lovely place to spend a life
The golden coast of splendid love
Why, it simply melts off strife
Little do the outside fools
Know of such earthly hell
They see not but the warmth and light
Give no thought to my awful plight
Fourteen years, so short a time
Yet stagnant, all the same
The day I travel far away
Shall at last relieve my pain
Where to go? No, nowhere hot
With a crowded burning beach
Please, save me tourist destinations
Be not so tacky, I beseech
No, only one place shall ever do
There is but one place for me
I seek it not to tour and leave
But a place to live and be
A life in Russia I do seek
To release America’s grip
To pry me away from its choking grasp
Out from its clutch I slip
“But Russia’s such an awful place!”
The ignorant do cry
“It’s filled with dreary snow and clouds
With dirt and filthy lies!”
“You’re crazy to have dreams
Of such a troubled, filthy place!”
“Be grateful that you live in such
A land of class and grace”
Yet however closely I may look
I see not such the trouble
Every country has its own
Such uninviting struggles
Perhaps the day will come when I
Will look upon my map
And see not land of hope and love
But a horrid, filthy trap
Today, however, all I see
Is a land where there’s still hope
America has run its course
And I can no longer cope
The grass is always greener, and
The saying still runs true
As long as Russia’s an ocean away
My dreams can live on through
I dream of snow and icy rain
Because it means I have left here
The day ice that ice falls by my house
That day I shall endear.
