We finished packing our duffels
And watched the last sunset
In our home enclave of white and navy blue
The fine town of Narragansett.

We knew that by morning
Once it was time to go
That Aunt Peggy would be holding back tears
And bustling goodbyes would grace the abode.

The boys and I, we knew our divine calling
Waiting for us on the road
But also knew we'd miss our sweet families
And the seeds of small town romance we'd sown.

The boys and I were headed off to California
Wearing our dreams on our sleeves
Leaving our New England lives behind
And getting our eats on the cheap.

California
The stereotypical eden of Americana
The paramount pied piper to dreamers
A conspicuous backdrop to life's dramas.

At long last we piled into our car
And we headed out on our way
Not knowing exactly if our journey was a dazed reverie
Or one of legitimate significance.

For we were just a coterie
Of aspiring writers.
And we certainly knew
That we'd be eatin' on the cheap for awhile.

But then again
Life would suck a whole lot more
If it teased us with pipe dreams
That were impossible to score.
