She Was Here
There’s a friend who sits beside me,
But never speaks a word.
I know her oh-so-very-well
Like the yearning song of a caged bird.
There’s a girl who sits beside me,
But she never moves at all.
Yet she follows me everywhere
In the warmth of spring and the gusts of fall.
There’s a memory inside me,
Like the empty chair to my right.
There’s a loss I carry in my heart
And it keeps me up at night.
