Elegy for Song
Listen: this winter, no music escapes through frosted windows
or draws straggling Metro commuters to stop.
There aren’t carolers in knitted hats
with song books telling of the Holy One--
just a dusty rehearsal room at the church down the street:
piano sold away,
sheet music left
in the compartment of the cherry-wood bench.
Wind is screeching,
a struggling soprano’s cracking voice
without a bass to anchor it
and your violin case sits in the corner--untouched.
