Winter Hearts
She was the ocean
Strong and dangerous
Yet beautiful and mysterious
I met her in the cold
When the wind was howling
Where glass bottles would smash
Against the creaking floor
And people would scream
While tears ran down their cheeks
I would pick her up
When she needed an escape
The smell of Camel cigarettes
along the beach,
And snow under our feet
Her soft pale skin
And the taste of coffee
Upon her lips
I swore to the sea
That my love for her
Would never die
It would not burn out like street lights
It would not crumble like an old statue
That even in the pit of her darkness
My silent whispers would comfort her
I still stand by this promise
Even though
She no longer calls
