My Mirror
In the corner of my room, next to the door stands a white frame.
6 feet tall.
3 feet wide.
Two pieces of glass.
The second piece draws my face on the first.
Then my shoulders. My legs. My feet.
A whole picture.
This is MY mirror. It fits me.
When I walk by any other mirror, and peak out of the corner of my eye.
I have no head. I stop.
Where is it? I crouch.
Oh… found it.
I can never see how I look in an outfit because it’s always how my shoulders look…
OR my head… OR my feet.
But in my mirror, it is all of them and I can feel confident in an outfit. Or at least notice that something just really doesn’t work... unless I stand awkwardly…
Like I had to…. in the dressing room.
But then I look longer and now that I can see it all, I get worried.
Too tall.
Disproportionate.
Big ears.
Gross hair.
No thanks, sorry, no more mirror.
I go and sit, watching tv, doing homework on my bed. Glancing every so often at my window...through the mirror.... My mirror.
I see the birds landing on the ledge and the sunset in my west view window... from the east... through the mirror…. My mirror.
Then it’s blocked.
No birds.
No sunset.
No window.
Just my sister… my sister?
Fixing her hair, checking her outfit through the mirror.... My mirror.
She looks pretty, especially in the mirror.
So maybe it does work…
and maybe it’s just me.
