My Immigrant Mother
How disheartening, the world and its people
that an immigrant must live in the shadows and cower under scrutiny
When a poor Vietnamese mother is mocked because she can’t say the word “tape”
And so she seals her confidence and speaks of nothing
the dirty capitalists laugh at her hard work and sweats of blood
They walk arrogantly with their feet spotted by someone’s tears
“Speak English!” they yelled.
But all she can utter is a cry.
She weeps in her dreams and rises tomorrow so her children may not wallow and drown in the ocean
Seeing her under the scum’s feet, entitled as they are, sends me into an inconsolable rage.
You filthy, insolent bastards!
You speak to me!
