My voice seemed unused

Echoing in an empty room

Their word against mine

As I scream and cry

I am ignored with passion

And the thoughts of their lies

In the empty room, I grow insane

With sorrow and misery

That my voice may not be heard

I know it is wrong

To be treated as

Mute.

The author's comments:

Mute is a simple poem that I made based on a school project that I really enjoyed. My teacher wanted each of her students to write something we find unallowable. Instantly, I began writing this very poem.

My entire life I have been treated as a child, a girl, with no voice nor opinion. I was shown into an empty room and unable to escape. I was also told there was no key to leave until I come of age where I actually matter. Yet I am out of the room, speaking my voice, and others can hear.

I wanted every person to know that they are not alone in what they are facing. This mistreatment and disadvantage many face is unfair. However, I wrote this to inspire others to push through their experiences and make the best of their situation. No matter the room you are locked into, continue to persevere.
