My Opening Lines
I look over my shoulder—
At the vision of light-filled creeks,
Inky binders,
Tattered notebooks,
Shining Christmas lights,
Blackbirds crying at night.
I look over my shoulder
At the road I’ve come,
At the story I’ve begun.
I look over my shoulder,
My suitcases slung with roller skates,
My handles heaving,
My tickets growing warm,
My train coming.
I can see
Moonlight and starlight
Grow bolder
Shine,
While the little sisters of the sun grow older,
My angels stumble down the line,
Too fast, too far,
For me to follow them,
And still I search for beauty,
And call out,
Find me,
Angels,
Little sisters of the sun,
Carry my maps,
My citadel-plans,
Behind me,
For the road I’ve come,
For the story I’ve begun.
My time will come
To shine.
