A Flower in Society
My image is a freshly bloomed flower, a clean slate for society
In the instantaneous moment I bloom, society paints the colors that I display
The way I move to the whistle of the wind, the sway of the grass
The way I express myself, with the various shades of the rainbow that I display
The way I speak to any listening creature lurking in the woodlands, hoping one will listen
The delicate petals in hues of fiery red and muted pink are painted a sterile white, a conformity
In the midst of the green field of others, I do not stand out, I am forced to conform
Like a flower, begging to stay planted in the soil she calls home, I beg
I beg to be myself, stripped of the societal expectations that were placed upon my head like a crown
The crown of society is entwined with thorns, made up of the ignorance and bigotry derived from the fellows, peering down from their casted throne
All is judged by the guidelines society deems to be, traced in the cobalt sky, with their chauvinistic hands
But I shall not become the apetalous flower, stripped of any sense of myself, anymore
I will not remove each petal of myself to mold into a compliance
I will not shed my dignity, my display, my spirit, to be received

"A Flower in Society" explores the sentiments of myself-a female and teenager-in the presence of societal expectations. In hopes of expressing the desire to disentangle from the expectations of others and to live in one's true self, this piece was written.
