Rabbits in the hutch
We girls
are rabbits, rabbits in the hutch
looked upon by beauty.
You trap us
Inside the hutch
so we may not run away
Just because we are rabbits (or shall I say girls?)
You feed us the carrots, the same old carrots
You don't even think of whether we’d like it
Not everyone is the same
When we eat the grass,
you get cross and punish us
Just because we are rabbits (or shall I say girls?)
You don't let us to be free from our hutch
Until we can give birth to babes
So you may be able to sell them
You limit our lives only to our hutches
Just because we are rabbits (or shall I say girls?)
You say we are cute
And hug us and pet us
even if we do not like to
Just because we are rabbits (or shall I say girls?)
Cannot we have space?
Cannot we be free?
Why are rabbits
supposed to be in hutches?

Many girls, especially black girls are not given the freedom which they are supposed to have.
I dedicate this poem to Dad and Mom who gave me all the freedom I need. I also dedicate this to all my Maternal Relatives.
I also dedicate this poem to all the girls who are not given the freedom. Your voice is your weapon, so speak up.
Finally, I dedicate this poem to all the readers of TeenInk.
