Never Ending Summer

This never ending summer has begun,

The scorching heat beats down,

The waves crash against the walls of my hometown,

The coral is bleached to an off white shade,

My hometown is now overrun,

This never ending summer will serenade everyone,

one by one by one by one.

Kids play and swim with a grin,

They don’t know the sacrifice that was made,

The life we lost,

The health it cost,

For this never ending summer to exist today.

They splash in the lifeless waters,

Inhabited by only what is manmade,

It’s a party fit for the world today,

Filled with plastic and bits of debris,

This never ending summer might just give us away.

But they don’t notice,

No one ever does,

Everyone too focused on their fun,

Laughter fills the empty space,

No one has room to think,

About what this never ending summer could possibly mean.

The author's comments:

This article is inspired by the effects that climate change has on the oceans. The climate crisis will cause the ocean to rise, tempuratures to increase, coral bleaching, and more. I compared the future of our world to a never ending summer because it reminded me of a summer that looked good at first but actually had horrible effects on the environment and living things, and this summer would never end.
