the confessions of victory
you hate me, all of you
you stare and ignore and whisper whisper whisper
behind my back because i am perfect
overachiever straight a’s teacher’s pet perfect
prodigy phenomenon club president perfect
unreachable unattainable unachievable perfect
you hate me, all of you
you shun and slight and gossip gossip gossip
in front of my face because you think I am perfect
because I am everything you never and always wanted to be
you hate me, and i don’t blame you
because i hate myself too
my room is a trophy case
medals draped over bed posts
walls armored with awards
closets crammed with golden proof
that i am good that i am better that i am enough
for them for me for everyone
i am a trophy case
hollowed out hungry for
the perfection that i have never had
because no matter how many awards i win
my parents have never said they were proud of me
not once

This piece was written for a school assignment where we had to reimagine a mythical character as a high school student. I chose Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.
