"We lay out our lives in a narrative we understand, like a movie, but are you enjoying making it or are you wondering who’s watching my movie.” - Donald Glover

When you look at me, what do you see?
Do you see an untroubled teenage girl, or do you see the real me?

Do you see a girl who looks in the mirror, despising what she sees?
Her flaws magnified; her imperfections seize.
A girl who longs to be beautiful, to fit in, and be cool.
But instead, she feels like an outsider, like some fool.

Do you see a girl who wishes to be someone else?
Someone perfect and assured.
A flawless woman indeed.
Someone who can get others' praise, without having to beg or plead.

Do you see a girl who doubts every action?
Second guessing every word.
Afraid of making a mistake
Her confidence blurred.

Do you see a girl, with her mind always on a spree?
Her thoughts are a prison, a raging sea.
Tossing and turning, trying to set herself free,
But her doubts and fears still her captive,
Keeping her as a hostage in her negative narrative.

Now let me ask you again,
When you look at me what do you see?
Do you see a plain old girl, or a prisoner begging to be set free?
Tell me,
Do you see the real me?

Hi!! I created this piece to enter a writing competition at my school. I got third place overall, but I'm still looking for more feedback!
