Impossible Promise

Beauty is an impossible promise,
Which is to say, though I try my best,
It will never be enough.
I must handle my appearance with care,
Because I will be criticized
If I forget to pluck my eyebrows,
Or suck in my stomach while I am eating.
I will be criticized because my teeth
Are not straight enough,
My eyes are too far apart,
And my nose is too big.

I wrote this piece in honor of everyone who feels they are not good enough. Society tells us we need to look a certain way or act a certain way to be "acceptable". How being beautiful is an impossible promise.
