footprints in the snow

you and i stood
leaves crunched under our feet.
sugar coated maple leaves. red berries blossoming.
pink cheeks. pink skies. closed eyes. the trees dance in the wind
where the dawn meets the night. the night leaves. inky black curses in
lettered print. read the constellations.
read between the lines, an orange in my hand. read before you and i
turn to go. both tired and alone.
we leave our footprints in the snow.
