childhood
long days spent drenched in the rain
she had a wide smile, oblivious of the pain
she hugged her plushie warm and tight
then her mother kissed her and wished her goodnight
happiness to her was the sight of the park
games of hide and seek made her tiny eyes spark
her only worry was who she would marry
or her desire to be a princess, mermaid, or fairy
she found pleasure in the littlest things
racing down slides and jumping off the swings
when life wasn’t full of stress and dismay
without worries of professions and pay
she held her little brother's hand as he took his first steps
a memory engraved in her brain, she will never forget
her father supported her every step of the way
what was bright pink has now turned gray
she took a piece of paper and drew a heart
which turned into wonderful, calamitous art
when everything was just music and an eternal song
before she realized everything she had is someday gonna be gone

My name is Kelsey Lu and I am 14-years old and a freshman in high school. I wrote this poem last year when I started to get a bit sad about growing older and out of all the innocence and joy that my childhood surrounded me with. I think we take that time for granted and it hit me pretty hard the day that I wrote this.
