"We are born with two incurable diseases -- life, from which we die; and hope, which says maybe death isn’t the end."
- Andrew Greeley

Pale limbs wrapped around a
brown trunk,
the victim of an undeniable
attraction
that refutes evasion.
You innocent,
trapped in this web of romance,
so beneath and beyond your earthy knowledge --
all commitment, passion...
but no longevity.
There will be no escaping --
unless by some altruism or death --
but you are more
beautiful
striking
meaningful
together
than either of you might be
apart:
You -- solid, ancient-yet-filtering;
the arms holding you, a child of my own generation --
reckless, knowing much of little;
a sensuous pagan
so willing to worship the things
so willingly believed necessary for life.

Perhaps you, oh Rooted One,
will teach the words of the wind,
the warmth of the earth,
and the surrender to existence.

The author's comments:
It is what it is, but then it's also something more. A poem written in my head, talking to a tree, but also a social commentary of sorts. A wish to have lived when things were simple. A wish to surrender to existence.

You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love.
Henry Drummond

I really don't get this poem at all!

a wish to surrender to existence? oh, how i wish my thoughts came out on paper as beautifully as yours do. you know it's good poetry when you can feel it in your chest. Thank you
