because of rays
Through a crack in the bathroom window
Awakened by the cold, is a sharp rectangle of light—
Embedded in the brick of a wall across the street.
The rays will flood the ghostly black snicket
With surgical yet ethereal light till
It touches your house, the bricks breathe
And it bounces back, and glitters in the reflection
Of the tiny specks of skin-grease on my fingertips
That will wipe away stars on the
Plastic handle of the toothbrush.
