Suppressed memories, secret memories
Lay unrevealed in the corners of my mind.
I'd locked them up and thrown away the key--
My memories.

I kept the drawers in my mind
shut tight, memories packed away,
for I could not cope with it all.
No one could know. No one could understand.

Struggle. Internal combat.
Is everything in there bad?
Rifling through the drawers looking for a glint of good.
In a secret compartment I found a certain spark.

I

realized:

locking

up
my

agonizing

Memories

does

not

take

them
away.

Why
must

I
hide

them

in

fear?

Instead,

I

hold
my

key,
unlock

my

drawers

with

pride,

and

unpack

my

memories,
for

the

world
to

see.

This is an ekphrastic poem I wrote for English class, where we had to pick a painting that spoke to us and write a poem inspired by it.
