In front of me
A blank page
Everyone else knows
What to write
But how am I supposed to write
With a prompt that says

Some kids say math
Some may say science
Others say history
While still others say P.E.
But what am I supposed to write

I can't write with prompts
They keep me framed in
I can write a short story
I can write some song lyrics
But what I can't do is write

If only I could write
What I wanted to
Instead of being trapped
In a box
That is asking what

The college-ruled paper
And pound my brain
And ask myself what

Wait, sometimes
I can write my stories

Hey, maybe writing

So I guess
I'll just turn this
In to the teacher
And hope for an A

Now, the words pour
From my paper
My mouth can speak freely
I can speak the truth
When I say writing

I get my paper back
And stare at the red marks
The teacher made
He says my grammar is wrong
Maybe I should rethink writing as
