Ring

What is this ring on my hand?
To the poor-it is a band worn by kings
To the rich-it's just a meager thing

A thin gold band
With 3 microscopic diamonds
On the ring finger of my left hand

They twinkle in the light
Brighter than stars
Shining
Even brighter than the reflection of the sun
On the blue sea

And on my finger
2 small holes, where diamonds used to be

Not from Tiffany’s
Not even from Macy’s
Given to me
By someone I loved

Left me
But always remains
In my heart

Worn humbly on my hand-

Which I will use to
Read every book
Write every letter
Cook every meal
Embrace my true love
Stroke my babies’ hair
Wipe away my occasional tears
Grasp my cane when I am old

Like she did.

This is an ode to my grandmother who gave me a special ring that I wear all the time to remember her.
