Selfish
It’s hard for me to answer why
And keep a straight face
I blind you with smiles
And keep you with hugs
You seem so happy
And for that, I am saddened
You are the only person on Earth it seems
That can make me feel guilty
I’m truly happy when with you
Your voice is that of heaven
But there’s a dark feeling inside of me
A guilty pleasure, it seems
** I’m a selfish child indeed
I’ll keep you to myself
Until the end of existence
I will call you mine
You will never leave my side
I will not allow you that freedom
I never want to loose you
You are my caged canary
You’re beautiful and sweet
I’m… not so very much
But you seem content by my side
But it’s not like I give you a choice
I hold your hand tightly
I insist on being your shadow
You seem amused by all this
But only I know the truth
Only I know why I do this
Only I understand
If I were to tell you
You’d surely want to leave
**
Opposites attract, some say
But I do not agree
There’s no way that one
Would love that such as me
But you find it in yourself
To be put in the same category as me
And you smile at our names
Together on a page
You smother me in love
Drown me with affection
And what do I do for you in turn
I handcuff our wrists together
**
Why would I feel so guilty
To have someone as perfect as you
Rather than feeling
Overjoyed
It’s the simple fact of
My believing that you
Are
Worth
So
Much
More
I’m a selfish child indeed
I’ll keep you to myself
Shackle you to my wall
Lock you in my closet
You will never leave my side
I will not allow you that freedom
I’ll never set you free
You are my caged canary
