Insomnia
A flicker, shadows cast at odd angles.
Is that a hand reaching towards me?
A foot attached to a body coming closer to me?
A face hidden in the depth of night?
I see things that don’t exist,
But what’s real escapes me.
The dim becomes dimmer,
Soon disappearing.
A shiver sneaks its way through me,
A snake in my veins.
I can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching me,
Tearing me apart with their eyes.
I feel invisible fingers caressing me,
Cold as death.
My chest is wrenching,
I long to scream.
Life and death cling to me,
Suffocating.
The imaginary figure comes closer,
Trapping me inside the corners of space.
The scream that needs to be set free,
Is locked inside of me.
I shake, and shudder;
A mixture of confusion,
A rollercoaster of twisted emotions.
Overwhelmed,
I can’t locate my senses;
I need to escape claustrophobia.
The touch, the breath,
Always in my nightmares.
The face, the body,
Always haunting me.
My fingers fumble,
Catching on the ignition.
A sputter from the palm of my hand,
A tiny light surrounds me.
And when I look up I see those eyes;
Dark and haunting,
Always watching.
The light diminishes,
And my soul is left waiting.
