butterfly net
I have this butterfly net.
This magic, fire-retardant butterfly net
and with it, I will catch that spark we let float away over this dirty, cold city
so devoid of love and emotion.
I will catch that spark and put it back where it came from
and maybe we won’t be so cold
and maybe you’ll let me back in
and maybe we can start from the tinder phase again
and build this fire the right way.
Because baby, we have enough ammo to burn this city down.
I have this butterfly net.
With it, I will catch those butterflies that escaped out of your mouth
the night you told me that the monarchs were dying.
I will catch those butterflies and shove them back down your throat
back into your stomach
and I know you’re afraid of butterflies,
but it’s a challenge we’ll face together.
I can
roll back into my cocoon and start over;
You can
learn to tell me when you’re scared.
And I can
learn to give you your space
and you can
try to move with the cycles like
the aftermath of a spark meeting a butterfly
is a phoenix.
We can rake these ashes into a pile
and we can
learn to start anew
because
phoenixes always rise from the ashes
and
fires take time to build
and
butterflies start as caterpillars
and
phoenixes rise from destruction
and
We’ve burned this city down
with too much passion too soon
but
we can rise from the ashes
and start anew.
I have this butterfly net.
this magical, fire-retardant, fool-proof butterfly net.
And if you ever want to borrow it,
I’ll teach you how to use it.
