Stranger
I remember how it used to be
My best friend, how I loved you so
My secret keeper, best among all
What have we become now?
Who is that stranger in the hall
That sees through me, past me
To look someone else’s way
In many ways you are the same
In appearance and in speech
But how can this be true when there is a stranger in your place
All that lies between us is my anger
And the things I can never say
So I keep them locked tight away
So that they may never stray to lay venomous fingers on you
It’s hard for me to look at you
To pretend that we’re okay
It’s not, it hasn’t been for many years
Perhaps we should accept this crumbled mess for what it has become.
I know not whether we can pass this test
Perhaps dear friend, it was not meant to last
I can forgive your new friends
The jokes I have missed
The secrets you have confided in another
And countless memories we did not share together
But I cannot forgive you for forgetting how it used to be
When it was just
You and I
