Shitty 2 AM Poem
2 AM
What will remain after everything ‘s been washed away?
Disintegrated like the glowing white embers
that wouldn’t stop burning
Swept up by the wind
So that they fell on my lashes.
my pupils stung as I tried to take my last glance.
You were shrugging me away
For the first time,
it couldn’t have been the last.
And back then I didn’t have the words
that formed grand sentences
let alone deep seeded sentiment
Or the grace
To run after you without stumbling
and bruising my elbows ,
Scraping the palms of my hands
I made you watch them bleed
A naïve heart gives everything and anything with the reckless abandon
So I gave you all the words I knew
Though I couldn’t possibly have meant them
Now that I am older
I let the city swirl around my head from time to time
My words are less clumsy and more combative
Fewer and farther between
Sometimes there is even a shoulder to lean on
A hand to hold
But most evenings my heart beats on its own
Struggling to breathe
