The War
Every year, beginning at high school, hundreds of thousands of students across US prepare for a war
A war which takes place every four years
This war seems invisible, though it exists
As the scars it may leave on you
The preparation for the war is a war itself
As you have to battle to shine among the others and be “The One” in your area
And then be the “The One” in your region
So then you compete with the bests in your country
They say “You aren’t just numbers”
And that’s true, because we aren’t numbers, we aren’t students
Before everything else we are people
And thanks to them, we have almost to become somebody else to be in your standards
This is a tricky war, where there is not a certain path for survival and success
Even the mostly well-prepared “warriors” might fall
For every single error, every single missing point, every single thing that you should’ve done but you didn’t
And they make us struggle, they make us cry
They give us hope so they can kill it later
After all the preparation, the war finally comes
And in the end, of hundreds of thousands, only dozen of thousands are chosen
But why did they choose him instead of me?
Oh yeah, his brother went there before, and his father too
Oh, he is able to the full, and he got 10 points higher than me
Oh, he did thousands of hours of community service even though he didn’t care about the people
Oh, I know why they didn’t choose me
Because I didn’t achieve their standards, I didn’t fully become another person
But they hurt me, and those scars will never leave me
My family gonna think that I didn’t work hard enough, that I wasn’t good enough
And that is unforgivable
Every year, beginning at high school, hundreds of thousands of students across US prepare for a war
A war which takes place every four years
A war for possible success, prestige, fame, academic excellence
A war that might change your life and set apart the men from the rat
Set apart who is good from who is bad
The war for the Ivy League
