a numerical obsession

in these lies we hide
so what is man that he controls the world
with mere two hands he counts the passersby
but cannot number those who matter most?
these sounds will drown like bombs, our lullaby

define

by these lies we identify
anticipation: the first step, the worst
to the answer, to the score, more to try
to a better next time, a paradigm

by these lies we divide
how much more do you have than the guy next door
in essence nothing, just see eye to eye
he lives and he smiles, you work all the while
two weeks later, in a world simplified
victims of our own creation, our loan
that measures rule us; we are terrified
so what is man that he controls the world?
are we not the truths that underlie
plus minus then divide and multiply
minutes pounds hours dollars justify
why.
