Getting Schooled
they tell us to live in a time
that we cannot control.
live for the future
work looking forward
a perfect tomorrow you
should always work towards.
take all the honors
and AP's you can stand
til you brain's at its brink
and it explosively expands.
you won't learn a thing
but just smile and say:
"get A's for tomorrow,
don't improve myself today."
teenagers don't have
a sense of curiosity
that was lost long ago
with their childish ferocity.
they will chase after drugs
and beer without our guidance
so keep them occupied
with empty-worded assignments
there's no time for poetry
or philosophy or such things
feed them mounds of busy work
before they have a chance to think
in the real world
there's no time to smell roses
or question what you're learning
so shove your books to your noses
and read passages 1-5
do activities A-G
read the words till they blur to gray
oh, you're such a fine student,
you see?
