Remember?
Remember the simplicity
Of being sure and naïve?
Being confident and capable
Of whatever you choose to believe?
Not having experience,
Or in turn, the need
To understand distrust,
Or how to disagree.
Remember that first heartbreak,
That confused kind of pain?
That deep red hurt
Leaving a permanent stain?
Remember that first rumor
Spread by a supposed best friend?
Facing the betrayal
And learning how to defend?
Remember the first time
Someone told you “You can’t”?
A seed of doubt taking root in your mind,
Watered by others, growing into a plant?
Remember unraveling
What you thought to be true?
Learning lies surround you,
A tapestry of taboo?
I remember thinking life was an open book,
Only to be disappointed with pain that leaves some for dead;
But I'm recreating my own happiness
A simple, beautiful chain of daisies atop child's head.
