Elegy
You wanted to give me everything
Had I asked, you’d have given me the sky,
So I could stretch broad wings
Built through your humor, your ideas, your encouragement
You were everything
You were the father, the uncle, the advisor, the best friend
You were the best person in the world
How life is so unfair, so cruel
To give you such a shell to live in
For someone as remarkable as you
We were all expecting it though
Your body was not up to living
Why didn’t you eat more fruit and less chocolate cake?
You promised you would be there
With a bat or a rifle when I got my first real boyfriend
I hope you’re not trying to kill him from heaven
You were going to walk me down the aisle when I got married
Spoil my kids and watch them grow
Teach them, love them, inspire them, as you did with me
But dead men can’t walk
Nor can they talk or laugh or listen
They can’t throw Pepsi at me in the car
That was disgusting by the way
You can’t take me to Denny’s
Or make crude jokes
Or cry in the movie theatres
You cannot advise me anymore
But I’m okay with that
Because I know that you are better off than you were,
resting in heaven
Or wherever you are now
I hope you’re having a good time up there
Eating as much as you want
Running like an Olympic gold winner
I hope you found your true love
And are living each day basking in it
I’ll see you up there soon enough
You better save me a donut
