Lightning Line
It started with the blue skies
And we would lie in the valley and bask in the sun
And the clouds were outside my periphery
And all was well.
But then the clouds came
In the shapes of their faces
Swirling, twirling
They swept you up in their tornado.
And I was left alone in the valley
But I thought it would pass.
And when you came rocketing back
Out of the sky
Out of the tornado they’d tossed you from
Only I saw you fall to the ground in the valley.
Only I tried to fix your wounds
But you pushed me away
Because you saw someone else coming
Into our valley.
It was him
And as we stood
On opposite ends of the valley
He stood in the center, looking both ways.
A sudden flash
My eyes adjust.
Now something’s different
He’s at the heart of a lightning line
And I try to reach you over it
But only get a scorched hand for my effort.
Only one person can cross
But it’s not you or me
He stands in the middle
Deciding where to go.
