Roses of Yesterday
We were so ensnared
By the threads of yesterday,
Threads dyed red
By our clinging fingers.
No time . . .
Couldn’t stop to smell the roses today,
Just chasing the scent
Of the roses of yesterday.
Intoxicating fragrance
That makes one forget,
Such alluringness
Hides sharp thorns.
Trying to grasp
What was already gone.
We were such fools.
But
Delusion shattered,
As it must ultimately do,
And reality crashed in,
That
Woke us up.
We finally realized
That it was all but a dream.
I rose
With you still on the bed,
Clutching the withered remains
Of flower petals.
But I had left
Long ago.
Today,
I plucked a rose,
Inhaled in its scent,
And thought of you,
With a smile.
