Late Night Company
do a lot of thinking
Especially at night
When I walk about
Alone in the dark
One of my favorite things to ponder
The stars, the moon, the clouds
"What do you wonder?"
I wish I could ask them
I can only imagine what they'd say
Would they tell me to go home?
Where I quote, end quote, "belong"?
Do they call me names?
Insult me?
For being out this late
On my own
With little protection
From the cold
From danger
From myself
Do they grow annoyed with my carelessness?
Do they become irritated with my questions?
Are they bothered by my outspoken thoughts to anyone who would listen?
But maybe they're not as hateful
As the rest of the galaxy
Maybe they welcome me
Thank me even
For taking the time to notice them
For carrying on conversations with them
About everything and nothing and why a raven is like a writing desk
For being there for them
As faithfully as they are there for me
Maybe they miss me when I'm gone
As I miss them when the sun rises
But maybe they're not as loving
As the rest of the universe
Maybe the don't care
Maybe they just ignore me
Label me another late night street walker
Whose feet are on the ground
And whose head is floating in the sky with them
I don't care
Company is company
And I don't mind the company I keep
The stars, moon, and clouds
