Daddy
From heaven came a bundle of joy,
Filled with happiness and love,
What more could a mother ask for?
He’s all she ever wanted,
Plus more.
He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico,
Where the dirt is dry,
And the cacti is abundant,
And the coyotes cry to the moon.
At age five, he was a trouble maker,
More curious than a monkey.
He ran, screaming through the sprinklers in his little bare feet.
Every day,
His mother would take his hands in hers,
Gaze into his big, sparkling eyes,
And tell him how much she loved him.
At age ten, he was crazy!
He destroyed everything in his path,
And threw fits,
And yelled,
And talked until he retired to bed at night.
And every night,
His mother tucked him into bed along with a kiss,
And a reminder of how much she loved him.
Age twelve rolled along in the blink of an eye.
He ate,
And grew,
And ate,
And grew,
But his loving personality never changed.
Even though he tried to resist,
His mother continued to tuck him into bed with a kiss,
And a reminder of her love for him.
At age sixteen,
He got his first car.
He spent all day out with the girls,
And returned late at night.
His mother would sneak into his room every night in his sleep,
Hold his strong, firm hand,
And tell him she loved him,
Even though he never heard.
And the days kept moving on,
As quickly as a fox in the night.
And then the dreaded day came,
When he left for college.
His mother cried a thousand tears,
For her now-grown-up baby.
He left without a tear,
But wept alone in the car.
And still she continued to remind him,
Of her undying love for him.
And the days went on.
At age twenty-one,
He met the girl of his dreams.
She was kind and loving,
And more beautiful than a rose in the prime of its beauty.
Today, they live a happy life together,
With four bright, happy children.
Even though his life is tough,
Life goes on as it did before.
And still, his mother thinks about how much she loves her son.
Though they live apart,
Her silent reminders of love for him remain within his heart.
Her wonderful gift from above,
Is all grown up,
But she still loves him more than life itself.
