Like Butter
Thrusting picket signs painted with the color of the sky the cardboard was carving through
*like butter*
Her throat was swelling up with the threat to cry
But she painted a sunny day behind her eyelids
and let one tear slip by
The self tied ropes around his ribs were forcing the air out of his empty lungs
*exhale*
and he choked on nothing because nothing was sucked back in
*inhale*
and they laughed in his face
and their spit burned his skin
She felt the thin stems between her thumb and forefinger as she slipped daisies in his gun barrel
the white daisies that grew in his weapon like weeds
and he watched her put them there
and she watched him grit his teeth
He stood behind caution tape looking down a tunnel
with no light at the end
and they frowned
*and they smiled*
with his heart in their hand
