Irene
Surging winds
Churning waters
Frantic mothers
Screaming daughters
Empty shelves in all the stores
The likes of which we’ve never seen before
Power out
Scream, don’t shout
Darkness in the window of each and every house
Night owls and teenagers
Worried fathers and insomniacs
All await Irene’s arrival,
Up all night, awake till morn
The surging winds, and churning waters
No maelstroms, or funnel clouds
Simply lack of power and leaf-strewn sidewalks
Plague these waiters,
And these watchers.
