Matter Of The Heart
At first she was a maybe
a fleeting thought of who knows
and why not and I don't know why I want to
She was a schoolgirl sort of innocence
a first blush and a first touch
I swear, the most beautiful secret ever kept
She was the warmest night there's ever been in December
the brightest most endless night in all the earth's years and then all of a sudden
she was a morning waking up alone
she was the frigid brutally honest sunlight pointing
to the jagged edges of a page torn in a rush from a pocket notebook and destroyed
by fourteen quick scrawled letters
'Goodbye, I'm sorry.'
