I sit in the darkness,
it surrounds me.
I feel the darkness,
it caresses me.
I want the darkness,
it attracts me.

I long for the night,
when into the world of dreams I soar.
I long for the night,
when the silence of peace lightens my spirits.
I long for the night,
when the world sleeps, but I awaken.
Night is my hour,
night is my living.

Yet, I long for the sereneness
that fills my soul in sleep,
as I stand in awe of the city lights
contrasting with the somber night sky.
I await the wings of sleep,
but they do not come.
I lie and listen
for the sounds of others awake in the night,
calling out to one another,
like wolves in neighboring packs.
I listen to the rushing of automobiles
hurrying down the freeway,
rushing home before the rising sun.

I lie in waiting,
waiting for my eyes to close,
waiting to fall asleep.
