Simple as the Sea
There’s something simple about the sea.
It listens when you talk to it,
And sighs when you ought to listen.
It speaks in gurgling pops,
Of water filling rocks.
And preaches of a land
Of sand-scuttling crabs.
It explains the acquired soul
Of the great Herring Gull,
And dances in the sand
To the rustle reed band.
It points with knowing lore
To a liner off the shore,
And brings the glass to me,
So I can better see.
There’s no dim-lit curtain
A setting sun can’t mend.
I know one thing’s for certain,
She’s more than just a friend.
