To Lick Glory Off Your Lips
Do you know how it tastes to lick glory off your lips?
To bring it to your mouth in small little sips?
To hear it swish between your teeth?
To feel victory and not defeat?
Do you know the taste of hard-earned sweat?
Of salty, sour, joyful tears wept?
Of chlorinated water or bitter brine?
Of the finished midterms’ pencil grime?
Do you know how it feels to fly off your feet?
When you win a game or that important swim meet?
To see an A-Plus marked in red ink?
To return after living on the edge of a brink?
Do you know the taste of pleasant words?
Of a victory scream or when water churns?
Do you know when sportsmanship rolls off your tongue?
A breath of fresh air that came out from your lungs?
Do you know what it’s like to live on the top?
When your heart swells up and the butterflies stop?
When a cheer arises and so do your hands?
And you feel like the king of a faraway land?
Do you know how it feels when you’ve done your best?
Even if you didn’t outdo all the rest?
When proudness grows and takes over your wits?
That’s how it tastes to lick glory off your lips
