Caviar
I do not want a love song
because love songs are cliche.
I don't want to be swept off my feet in that sense
on some extravagant row boat
you and I after dinner for two
of champagne and caviar
and other expensive things
I could never afford on my own paycheck.
I just want you to be honest
and take me out for sandwiches
cheap subs that wouldn't cost
anymore than five dollars.
I want you to take me for a ride
in your beat up gold Chevrolet
and we'll drive to the shoreline
and watch the seagulls fight with the pelicans
over left over breadcrusts and fish bones.
It's not that I hate love songs
I just want this to be real
because the only songs that really touch the heart
are the simple ones
because we relate.
