pudgy toes
I tried to be what people wanted
tried to see what they saw in me
I wanted to love as I had heard about it
but never thought it could be
could I be loved for my imperfection
freckled face and small nose
striped of makeup and bare of beauty
without my mask, staring at me in the reflection
could I be loved for my pudgy toes
my wavy hair or big eyes
I wanted to love like they had told me
Blind, unconditional, irrevocable
I wanted to be the love at first sight
the phantom that haunts the heart
the bird before its first flight
I wanted to be the idea of a love that would never die.
